i suggest darker bro.. e.g tahaitian moon sand

im using slate tile and black gravel to fill in the gaps in the back.

I'll post my white/black substrate pictures once again. Black substrate really does darken some fish considerably.

I have also included a picture of my school of Clown Loaches in a Tahitian Moon sand tank. In the morning the CL's are really dark; you can barely make out the strips. By mid-morning they are all colored up. The Blood Parrot is just the opposite; he is bright red in the morning and fades to pale orange in the evening.

but what you are describing happens on all coloured substrates. its the day/night cycle that does it.

in the morning, many fish are dark, especially cichlids, when they 'wake up' they are lighter. your loaches are doing the same thing.

the same would happen if they were on a light coloured substrate.

that being said, white sand with a dark black or dark blue background looks really good.

I really like the look of your black tahitian sand tank. looks great!

Yeah that's howw cichlids are. but yeah I am goin to use slate tile. I'll post avpic when i get it set up

this is what im using as my "substrate" gaps towards the back is going to be filled with black gravel

to me black substrate always looks better than any other substrate. Especially with that stock list you have. Are you planning on getting these fish while theyre young? That list is going to outgrow that tank pretty quick.

What a big difference between the dark and light substrate in those pics...I like the light substrate and have it in my tank as well. Don't need to run as much lighting with the white sand cause it reflects light everywhere. I have 4 54w t5's, but only run two at a time...one actinic and a 10k daylight with plants in a 90g high, it's all I need... : )
