I just scooped up a huge net load out of my 75g tank. I like the look but I hate when it makes your lighting look like you bought it from walmart.. Any ideas about what you guys think would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i have something similar to duckweed, i think its water lettuce... anyway, i find if it starts getting too crazy i just remove a bunch of it and wait for it to multiply... not much you can do about unfortunately?

Based on my personal experience. Get rid of it asap. It will start to clog filters and over run your tank. Pros are a personal reference. It may provide some coverage but as you have stated it gets annoying fast.

I have it in all my tanks to a certain degree. My midas, jd, and turtle tanks are relatively duckweed free since they like to munch on it. I love it for my tanks bc it helps keep the skittish fish calm and the water clean. I normally net it out, feed the animals what I can, and compost the rest when it gets out of hand.

Yeah helps with processing nitrates or was it nitrites... Can never remember...

cons- irritating when it gets too crazy.
clogs up my filter

pros- my aro's aren't as skittish because they have coverage
gives my aros **** to look at, makes me at least feel that it helps to NOT develop drop eye but thats just my opinion
soaks up excess nutrients in the tank that can cause algae bloom. also this is just my thinking so if i'm wrong someone correct me-- duckweed draws co2 from air so they soak up the excess nutrients that i dont want in my water but leaves the dissolved co2 for my plants to consume

so far i've found it useful so i've kept it

duckweed and every other floating plant are regarded similarly to things like snails by many aquarists. People act like they are a threat or a pest but I've never had issue controlling either. Ultimately you control both similar to algae, have adequate filtration, don't over feed, don't leave the light on 24 hrs a day. Getting RID of snails is harder but in the end they are not harmful to your system, I've never had issue with them breaking filters etc. like other people on here. Same goes for duck weed.

I often wondered how it clogs filters? Is it coz when it dies and sinks it gets sucked into the filter intake?

i can't think of a pro - i hate the stuff. Never put in a tank with CO2. I have to thin it out all the time.
