Pros and cons of duckweed!!!???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ that makes sense... i guess i never have that problem coz my intakes are quite close to the bottom...

Since duckweed is a living plant, wouldn't it also help with the nitrate levels in the tank? I have even tried to get duckweed going in my tanks because of this, and I wanted a shady tank too, but every time I try, it dies off in about two weeks - or gets eaten....

^ Weird that it would die in your tank... every one i spoken to has said its indestructible... maybe not enough nutrients to support the plant? or maybe too much light?

I've never had duckweed in a tank, but i have several planted tanks with tons of Amazon Frogbit. I got a bag full of it for cheap from a guy over on plantedtank, and it went crazy. It looks sort of like a clover mixed with a lily pad, clusters of big (~1/2" to 1"), round leaves, and long, trailing roots, which I think look really awesome. It's big enough to be easy to remove when it gets out of hand and wont get sucked into filters. A great alternative for people who want cover and/or nutrient suckers but don't like duckweed.

Wish I had a pic to throw in, but I'm at work

edit: here's one I pulled from google. Mine's a bit thicker than this, but I need to scoop some out soon. Between it and the sagettaria, my fish are running out of swimming space.
