Any system or filter can fail but in this case i dont see how the ac's o ring or design is at fault ?

Anything can be viewed as a design flaw depending on the narrative. The bio wheel on the penguin can be seen as a point of failure.

Simple fix for ops issue. Have the filter tilted forward and remember to clean the mech and dose with ridx or a similar product

What some refer to operational precautions, I refer to common sense - and I live in a world where I clean up behind engineers on a regular basis, so I am usually pretty quick at pointing out design flaws. Sorry, I don't see the AC design as a flaw, and I don't see a lot of people complaining about the design over the past 25 yrs, especially not having a side leveling tool included. lol

My point of posting here was to help the OP understand why his filter overflowed, even when cleaned weekly. I clean mine every 3-4 months without issue, but as previously discussed a run a light load compared to most, I use sludge cleaning bacteria, and I understand the dynamics of the tools that I use.

+1

I would not agree with you about the bio wheel on my penguin...
I love it the only thing I would do is make a larger gaurd so that my Fire Eel would stop getting in there

Frank's point was that many can (and have) seen that part of the penguin as a design flaw over the years. He wasn't taking a stand, or asking anyone to agree or disagree - he was attempting to make a point.

But this topic is about AC filters, as that is what the OP has, and was using when the fail took place. In my humble opinion it was a clear case of operator error, due to how the media was set up in the filter box. An easy fix.......

No offense man but thats the bias that most people have towards any product they use. The biowheel is a moving part right...sooo yes its a point of failure.

Ive never had an o ring fail on an ac but yes that is a potential point of failure

Bingo Neil.

Pros amd cons to any filtration method and no matter how much effort you put into flood proofing the main thing is to stay away from murpheys law.

I went nuts with flood proofing my sump...only to flood my basement not paying attention while refilling the tank lol

Op can go nuts putting rubber matts down but is it worth it? So what happens when enough water spills that the matts cant contain it ?

Using the floor lock sealant ? Do you go 1,2,3, 8 ft around the tank ?

The issue that caused the flood is easily fixed.

The only way to be 100% flood proof is to not keep fish lol

I run all my Penguins without the biowheel, and threw away the biowheel on day one. Biowheel is an unnecessory gimmick and takes away flow energy. I use Penguin as bare bone mechanical, as I get enough biological from in tank substrate filtration. I will not waste money on more complicated Emperor HOBs with spray bar biowheel either, thoughit is made by the same company.

I dont want to get into a pointless "my filters better than yours" debate, thats cool that you were able to use it to suit your needs. But that doesnt mean that it would work for everyone. In fact it would probably only work for a few. If you increased your bioload it wouldnt work for you either.

I did not get offended or anything. I was just saying I like the bio wheel

It actually does keep beneficial bacteria on it
