protein filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its just 1 plant and my fish are beating the hell outa it when i drop food in or when they fight...

bluegill are freaking mean towards eachouther lol.. should i get clown loaches or the golden algie eaters??? and how big do these algie eaters get?

go with the golden algae eaters only because they are good at keeping the tank clean. clown loachs are nice to look at but unless you have a snail problem they serve no purpose. golden a. will help keep glass and decore green free.

my water is soft im guessing cuz there is alota foam at the top of the water...

Healthy water does not retain bubbles. Foam is a sure sign that something is wrong. A protein skimmer will reduce your bio-load before it turns into ammonia. Fish pee is already ammonia, but poo and left over food is not. A protein skimmer removes these before they have a chance to enter the biological system. Protein skimmers are popular on salt tanks because of the expense of the salt. Water changes are very costly. Fresh water tanks are extremely inexpensive to change the water in. It is cost effective to have a protein skimmer on a salt setup but not for fresh water. It is quite a convenience though. If you have a heavily stocked tank or messy eaters, it will be a nice piece of equipment to have. You can circumvent having one by making a drip system or increasing your water change schedule.

I have read somewhere that a protein skimmer is basically a highpriced oxygenator for FW, because the difference in density doesn't doesn't allow for good frothing. If you are getting good froth out of it, your tank is need of some serious attention.

this is quite true it does work but no where near what it does in the salt. but even fresh water can foam just go to any of the great lakes.

depends on the hardness/softness of your water. the harder the water, the less it foams. no foam no protein skimming. it will work but just not as effective as the salt setup. I think the clarity of a salt water system has a bit to do with the refraction of salt in the water.

it has more to do with salinity than water hardness
