hi all,
Im new to monsterfish keepers as I been following your posts for a long time and now decided to join your forum. currently im raising super red dragon flowerhorns in my divided tank and wish to know if im feeding the right source to my fish. bloodworms on alternate days and high colour enhancer with protein additive on between. im interested in introducing beef heart recipes as well. what do you suggest?
thanks for your help guys I really appreciate.

I suggest a quality pellet for main diet, protein snack once or twice a week, you are raising a fish not a flower, healthy fish will have vibrant color. that being said aqueon has marigold and chili powder, both color enhancers and good food for your fish.

SRD, like all flowerhorn genetics favor an omnivorous diet, not one rich in protein, especially mammal protein such as beef. A quality pellet diet is all your fish require to thrive in captivity.

Agree with the above, beef was once thought to be good, but of late, research has shown fish have a hard time digesting the type of fats in mammalian flesh, which can lead to liver failure. How many times do you think fish get a chance to feast on beef in nature?
And though FHs are not a "natural occurring" cichlid, the crosses of species they are made from, come from omnivorous species that require vegetation to help clear the gut to remain healthy.

Dead on. A quality 35% pellet does the exact same as a 50% at juvenile/adult stages. Anything above 40% will pollute water is fed everyday so stick with a good stable.

i agree with what you have said except that flowerhorns origins dont feed mainly on vegetation either. they feed mainly on crustaceans such as krill and smaller breeds. im feeding pellets with enhancers on alternate days which contains all the necessary vitamins needed to raise it healthy. recently ive added beef heart as well with krill and crustaceans. this diet has been suggested to em by an asian fh breeder so i dont think its a bad idea afterall.

sorry ididnt understand the last part.did you mean chilli is good and vital for vibrant colours? i dont think there is a way to end up in the fh stomach as garlic in beef heart is already a problem to be delicatessen for them

I am no way saying feed your fish chili powder or merry gold powder, they are a small additive to the food I suggested as proven color enhancers. not meant for something you do your self. again good diet, good quality pellet needs to be your fishes main diet. protein snacks once or twice a week I good thing, to much bad for the fish and can really freak up your nitrate creep.

I never said that the genetic make up of FH was herbivorous, I used the term omnivorous. Too much protein in a FH diet is harmful, not helpful. Beefheart is one of the worst dietary supplements that you can feed your fish, and in FH has been associated with some serious gastrointestinal complications. See following paper:

This isn't my first rodeo with FH, or fish nutrition, but feel free to do as you please. Good luck.
