protein skimmer on fresh water tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
fresh water is not as dense as salt so it wont do too much good but it will increase o2 levels in the water imo its not worth using a protien skimmer on freshwater

Skimmers can work very well in a POND ... but not so well in a tank to start fresh water will not foam uo as much as saltwater... in a pond there are more organics involved such a foaming action can in fact happen...... over all in a Tank all it will do is increase ur O2

well think about it,

what about the monster fish we keep in our monster tanks?

what they dont give off as much waste as a pond?

if this is true then a protein skimmer would be great for a monster fish tank

and for the record, POND SKIMMERS ARE NOT PROTEIN SKIMMMERS

pond skimmers just skim the top of the water for debris , they dont have the same function as a true protein skimmer.

Thanks for the reply you all.
I came up with this idea afther reading several articles about DIY proteine skimmers (not surface skimmers) used with succes on Koi ponds and one article about someone who is using one on a a 1500 gal aquarium, altough couldn't make out out of this last one if he has any bennefice out of it that is worthwhile.

Im not saying your right or wrong about a skimmer working on freshwater but it would seem to me there arent as many organics in your average monster tank as there is in a pond. In an outdoor pond you cannot usually gravel vac so waste builds up more readily in the substrate. That is why plants can be so important to a ponds filteration, they use up the waste. Also the plants in the tank do decay and die. Leaves and other plant matter fall into the water and decay too. In a tank if you would simply remove the dead plant but this is not likely on a pond. These things make for more organic molecules in a pond than in a tank.
