Protein skimmer on fw tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Tornado II is a foam fractionator developed for freshwater applications. Works on the same principal as the Clarity pond foam fractionator but at a more reasonable size.

Thanks for posting this. Why or maybe how does this work when others seem to not work? Better or different design? Or are people not using the other designs properly in FW conditions? I assume they don't work as well as in a SW condition, but I thought the difference was stark, while this photo looks like its effective.

I'm pretty jazzed at having another tool to use, but I don't get it.

From the onset, you can see that this skimmer is architecturally different from a SW skimmer. It works on the same principle as a degassing system with the exception that the developed foam is contained instead of being released after degassing. The foaming chamber outflow is at the top of the chamber allowing the foam to shed water before being forced out the upper port to a waiting waste container.

How big are your rtc and rtc/tsn hybrid...if your nitrates are high all u have to do is more wc...if your ammonia is continuing to spike that either means inadequate bio filtration or your overfeeding

My ammonia was only high at the very beginning of adding more gravel. I have not had high ammonia since so I think I'm good there. My water change hose is broke and I'm waiting on the new one to come in to get back to water changes. I think thatch be the only reason for high nitrates

Yeah, with that stock on that tank, I'd be hitting the heavy wc's a few times a week if it were mine.

Very interesting oddball...looks more like a saltwater phosphate reactor than skimmer. I didnt know anything like this existed for freshie applications. From looking at the pics id say the media inside would help to create bubbles but agreed its working in a completly different way than traditional saltwater skim. Very cool.

Small tank for that stock and with the amount of waste they produce you should be doing WEEKLY water changes if not twice a week.
