Is the Red Sea Prizm Deluxe Hang-on Skimmer rated for up to a 100gal a good skimmer for a 55g reef tank?

Don't skimp on a skimmer! Always get the best one you can afford.

I have no personal experience with the Prizm, but many reefkeepers have told me that the less effective brands of skimmers work well if you double the rating like that.

I have experience with the Prizm, and I can tell you it isn't worth the cardboard it comes in. Don't buy it.

The Prizm skimmer deluxe rated for 100 gallons? It is the loudest skimmer I ever heard. First I tried hanging it on the back of a 95. Then I tried hanging it on the sump. Even with it being inside my stand I could still hear it in the next room.

Maybe it was just the one I bought but I didn't want to get another and have the same thing happen. After that experience, I did a little more looking and found that tons of websites, forums, blogs, and people recommend doubling the skimmer rating. If it says 100 gallons use it on a 50 or smaller. Halving the advertised rate is how I do it now.

what do you guys recommend then?

Are you looking for HOB, HOS, or external?

I recommend drs doster and smith turboflotor. I have two different sizes and am happy with their performance. Look at the different ones at drsfostersmith to find models that meet your tank specs, then look for reviews about the different models.

i think i have that same one, the prizm red sea one, I didn't realize how loud it was until i turned off my air stone in my bucket.
I might have to quiet it down with a new one.
