Are they worth the money and time to clean in a freshwater aplication?
What is your personal experience????
Thank's in advance! Mic

protein skimmers are not normally efective in fresh water due to the low specific gravity and the pump or airstone is unable to create fine enough bubbles. I have seen large stock feeder tanks that protein skimming worked on with the addition of auger to the water.

actually protein skimmers work very well depending on the quality of the model

protein skimmers do a good job at oxygenatiing the water and if you have a ozonizer they work very well as a reactor.

*paging oddball*

do you know if they work well at removing organics? depending on the model and bubble size?

A protein skimmer can work well in a FW setup. However, the home aquarium models won't work well because they incorporate inexpensive low-efficiency venturi valves. Commercial grade venturi injectors create much finer bubbles that can produce dry-foam in FW. These skimmers aren't widely used since it's less expensive to simply perform routine water changes on FW aquariums.

BTW, the over-the-counter skimmers can help increase the DO levels in FW tanks. That can be a big help for maintaining low-O2 intolerant species.

hahaha i knew it! :grinyes:

not to be whoring this guys thread

but do you know any specific models that does remove organic?

I only can tell you about the one I use on my FW system. It's a Top Fathom model TF12A2. It's over a foot in diameter and 7 1/2 feet tall. The flow rate is 38 gals per minute with a 2 minute dwell time. The venturi is a machined unit (compared to a pressed or molded unit) with a dedicated blower providing a constant 10psi. The skimmer plumbed in ran me about $2500.00
