  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for asking the question. I was wondering the same thing. The only additional asking has anyone had success with a FW tank with lots of life plants and plant substrate?

In my years of experience and experimenting with filters, and having to deal with Oscars, Protein Skimmers will work in Freshwater Tanks, you just need to have a bigger gph rate for your tank, and the same rules applies no waste no work/ no skimming in this case.

With Oscars or any large messy fish you will get waste.

Welcome to MFK!!!

There was no question as to whether or not protein skimmer would work in freshwater. The issue is 'would they work well'. As stated, the more efficient venturi injectors on commercial skimmers would produce microbubbles that could extract the more-desired dry foam instead of extracting wet foam. Wet foam is less desired since this is additional waste to monitor/store/discard.

i have seen skimmers designed just for FW on the market lately i will look for the link
