There are a few protein skimmers designed specifically for fresh water applications. Here's a thread on one.

Let us know how it goes. Is the Johnson outboard for back up?

if it peaks at feeding time im thinking the only thing your removing is tinted water, as protien skimmers die down during feeding time in sw tanks. that and the fact you have a small skimmer on a large setup im shure it looks like your removing alot but in all actuallity the money spent on the skimmer would cost more than a drip system which would provide better water quality 100x over and provide more stable water perams and no water changes.

I totally get what you are saying but i said it peacks at those times .And your providing a constant water change with a drip for sure but RO units and there there is cost to purchase and up keep on the canisters to freshen up after the initial cost of a skimmer if you make it yourself that's it .And as water changes go either way your doin a water change just preference really and thats the direction that i choose to go or am choosing:)

I put my small protein skimmer in my indoor freshwater pond.
I only connected to it an air pump.
The result was this...
