P's and O's

i added oscars to my piranha tank for a lil while. maybe 2 months then i removed them. the oscars just looked stressed like hell everyday. they always got picked on and i felt bad for them. if you dont need to do it, i wouldn't. i did it as an emergency kinda thing, i had no tank for them at that moment. but if you wanna try it feel free, that sulking that the amazonian is talking about is so retarted but true, oscars sit sideways like there drunk or dead. the piranhas can and most likely will strike at the oscar when he does this. i got lucky and mine "sulked" behind some rocks for a few days b4 showing his face.
 
i've never kept either, but if you throw in a divider, put the oscars in one side and the Piranhas in the other. then give th oscars double portions of food for a while. that way, they can set up territories without having to fight for them, and they get bigger than the piranhas.

Oscars
They have been seen not to only exist with Pygocentrus species but lead the attack on any food the shoal would be interested in. They can work out to be successful because:

-They are very aggressive fish with a bold character.
-Oscars never run away from attacks but face them head on in a full charge.
-In the wild Oscars have been seen defending and fending off shoals of attacking piranhas.
-Oscars are relatively cheap and grow fast, so can easily be replaced if mishaps occur.

Although they may survive with piranhas, they will rarely become part of the shoal.

you should add a larger oscar if u r gonna put one in. it WILL get bit. maybe never fatal, but there is no way you can keep something as slow as an oscar wit ps and not expect some bites.
 
sulking is the alien thing they do. looks like there dead and they jus float around. usually happens right when u first put them in. they keep an eye on there tankmates but lay flat on the ground. usually when there uncomfortable. mine did this for so long it got annoying. but he finally stopped.
 
I had a small RBP in with a small convict in a 10g. As long as I fed them every day they got along fine. As soon as I would skip a day or two, the convict would appear to have fins half their normal size. I ended up giving the piranha away though. Had to sell my two small tanks. But that's neither here nor there. Sorry. For the most part, piranhas seem to be pretty docile as long as you don't make 'em go hungry.
 
yeah if u really care about the O's take them out..but if u got the space and feed daily..they should be ok for a while I have seen it work but I have seen the results of missing feedings....good luck on whatever u decide
 
If you really value your oscar's "show quality" I wouldn't risk it, because as was said already, P's are fin nippers, to say the least.

There was a really lovely photo of a guy trying to sell his oscar that was housed with piranhas, if some of you recall that one. I'd hate to see that happen again.
