Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum vs Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are 2 different species that looks very similar. The sizes do vary as well. P. corruscan is als a very similar looking fish, but it lacks the "tiger stripes" and has dots instead.

Nope.

They are different.

the ones commonly available are Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum, which are extensively bred in Asia for the pet market.

Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum and Pseudoplatystoma corruscan are almost never seen, especially the latter.

;:)

Well, both Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum and P. tigrinum are caught in the Brazilian Amazon. Not all tigrinum come from Peru. There's a marked difference in the head profile, far more reliable that the striping pattern. The head of tigrinum has a constriction between the eyes and the mouth, that fasciatum lacks. This feature is better viewed from above, for obvious reasons, but it's somewhat visible in this picture:

Actually, the constriction is in the head profile, between the operculum and the corner of the mouth. The mouth is slightly wider than the rest of the face. P. corruscans is just like P. fasciatum, but is dotted instead of barred, BTW. Oh, almost forgot... The specimen pictured was caught in Santarém, in the state of Pará, Brazil.

Best regards.

Daniel.
