hey guys, I got my first mbunas today and I picked out what I thought to be powder blues or(pseudotropheus socolofi). When I put it into the tank it still looked like a scolofi. Then when the lights whent off I went to feed the catfish and my scolofi had dark blue verticle bars on it. Is this normal? Are there any other mbunas with similar coloration to scolofi?

any suggestions or comments welcomed

It could possibly be a metriaclima greshaki. I had a couple in a dimly lit 20g quarantine tank. When I moved them into my 55g Malawi tank, the bars practically disappeared and they became a bright powder blue. That's just a guess, some good photos of them would help to truly identify though.

Greshakai will have red\reddish dorsal fin, socolofi will have black trim.

I would say you have either a stressed socolofi, or a Pseudotropheus Elongatus which has just coloured up a wee bit since coming home from the LFS mn (they are v similar to socolofi in most of their colour morphs albein with the vertical barring).

it's only at night I saw this kind of coloration. This morning he looked exactly like a scolofi, blacks trim, light blue with fadding bars.

unhappy male salousi? or non dominate, bars fade. Some of the tropheops look this way as well. Perhaps even an afra... the options are limitless. How big is it, and of course pics.

It couldn't be salousi because salousi start out yellow and all my fish are no bigger than two inches. I'll try to get pics up

My juvie socolofi was showing dark bars when I first got him and faint bars when it got a little bigger and was stressed.

Here's how it looked:

And how he is now:

mines look more like your top picture althogh I think they might be younger. I have three(supposed) scolofi. One looks like the top pic you have ibr3ak and the others are all blue. My scolofi are about 1inch to 1 1/2 an inch long right now.
