I just came across this most amazing find, yes I'm thoroughly excited. Seems Tim McCaskie and his buds found Pty insolitus. I hope a few specimens can be saved for a breeding project so that this gorgeous fish may be available for conservation once again. Pe gymnopreopercularis is also from the Mangarahara and could no longer be found after the river was dammed. So this is fantastic news that at least two species of fish may be recovered and if an in-situ conservation program can be set up, it may secure their long-term survival.

Just saw the newly posted article in The Star, but still no pics. Has anyone posted photos of the group yet?

I just put on a presentation for the local aquarium club a week ago on the cichlids of Madagascar. During my research, I came across the best, most detailed account of the expedition by the LZS London Zoo in collaboration with the Toronto Zoo. Here's the link ... a fantastic story of co-operation and determination.

Wow, what an awesome read - great link, Jim, far more detailed than anything that I had previously read on the expedition for these fish. Thanks for posting it!

Thanks Jim for sharing. It's a terrible read... I heard from a close friend that used to visit Madagascar, that indeed all that is left is dust and drying rivers. Without a program of reforestation, native species- including people, will be doomed.
