This species is only the third to be available to hobbyists this side of the pond. It's as yet undescribed as bears some resemblance to Pty grandidieri though coloration during spawning is not the canary yellow characteristic of grandidieri nor the off-spawning season dark-magenta-black of Pty loisellei. I hope this species becomes well established as it's undemanding and able to hold its ground in large Central American cichild tanks, as well as, African and community tanks.

Super that you have them spawning.

Kudos Jose! I'm thrilled to see someone else has been able to breed them in the US. Looking forward to updates.

Wow! That's going to be a ton of fry. Looking forward to wiggler pics. Are you planning on saving all the spawn?

I do hope all the eggs hatch. I'd like to think that's an actual pair and not 2 females. I removed the eggs for artificial rearing- that rock must weigh 30 pounds and was tricky getting it into a 10 gallon tank..

Thanks Jim and Laurie. Are you still breeding your Tarantsy?

You're welcome Jose.

Since their first spawn in June 2013, there have been two additional unsuccessful attempts in their community tank. One didn't appear to be fertilized. The other happened so quickly I didn't get the chance to pull the rock before the eggs were eaten. There was an increase in discord with the pair and my female paratilapia. I've recently moved them to their own tank. So hopefully they will spawn again soon. They've been cleaning a rock and its surrounding areas, but no other signs of an imminent spawn and their breeding tubes aren't enlarged.

Also, there appears to be a pair forming in my Maculatus group. Cleaning, moving sand, courting dance, shimmies, and extended tubes. Their breeding tubes are pink, which I find interesting. I'm guessing that's because the eggs should be pink as well?

Good luck with your new clutch of eggs!
Laurie

BTW, más vale tarde que nunca? If I'm remembering correctly, Better late than never? :)
