Ptychochromis sp Tarantsy spawn, más vale tarde que nunca!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're welcome Jose.

Since their first spawn in June 2013, there have been two additional unsuccessful attempts in their community tank. One didn't appear to be fertilized. The other happened so quickly I didn't get the chance to pull the rock before the eggs were eaten. There was an increase in discord with the pair and my female paratilapia. I've recently moved them to their own tank. So hopefully they will spawn again soon. They've been cleaning a rock and its surrounding areas, but no other signs of an imminent spawn and their breeding tubes aren't enlarged.

Also, there appears to be a pair forming in my Maculatus group. Cleaning, moving sand, courting dance, shimmies, and extended tubes. Their breeding tubes are pink, which I find interesting. I'm guessing that's because the eggs should be pink as well?

Good luck with your new clutch of eggs!
Laurie

BTW, más vale tarde que nunca? If I'm remembering correctly, Better late than never? :)

Wonderful Laurie!!! I have had these fish a long time without any breeding activity, naturally I wanted to encourage them by removing other tank mates. I left a rather boisterous Pe nourissati and despite the constant chasing, the pair formed and the rest is history.
The eggs are doing well. out of a large patch, 2 seem infertile but since the spawning area is spread out, fungus should be limited.
Good luck with your maculatus.

Thank you Jose! I'm looking forward to more pics. Boisterous Lamena ~ I don't think I'll ever be bold enough to keep them!

I haven't tried to track how the fish ended being sold by Jeff Rapps, were these collected by Paul Loiselle??

The short answer is yes. This is what I can remember offhand:

Jeff obtained them from the Denver Zoo. I bought my pair from Jeff as adults. I'm a member of NJAS, North Jersey Aquarium Society. I was fortunate to meet Paul at a meeting, he is a member as well. He firmly believes my pair are descendants from one of his collections. Paul has about 12 from my pair's first spawn. Paul put me in touch with Rich Bireley, who has about 16 from my pair. Rich gave me more details regarding specifics. I'll look the rest up in my records.

Are your fish from Jeff as well?

Thank you Laurie for the information. My fish are from stick that Jeff had- I was told the fish were for sale and my friend Dave Shumacker secured 6 for breeding.
So far the eggs developed but quickly fungused :-( I don't think I'll have fry but I hope the pair will spawn soon again.

You're welcome Jose.

I've checked my emails from Paul Jeff, Rich and Jim Ellenberger. The tarantsy are believed to be descendants originally obtained during one of Paul's collection trips. Jeff obtained them from Alex Saunders at the Denver Zoo.

Good luck with your group! BTW, Matt and Duane also have groups of tarantsy from my pair's first spawn.
Laurie

Looks like were all doing the same thing with potential breeders. Each time my pair spawned, they were very attentive to their eggs, but also appeared very territorial and nervous. A few days after the first spawn they ate about 1/3 of the eggs before I pulled the rock. Not overly aggressive to other species, but the male 'patrolled' the perimeter constantly, lots of posturing and chasing.

Matt how is your group?

My largest male is now doing a lot of digging, looking nervous, and patrolling an area right in front of the glass. He and most of the others have been yellowing up quite a bit too.
