Public aquarium touch tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im pretty sure the public aquariums know exactly what they're doing and take up every precaution on the rays with their safety and health as well as the publics safety

I too would like to know what aquarium is doing a FW ray touch tank. I've only seen one, and it was up in Duluth, MN - they have several motoros.

As for everyone elses touch tank comments.... touching doesn't hurt the rays under normal circumstances. Barbs are trimmed regularly. Not all places put them under to do so, many are very conditioned to come over and be trimmed without the need to use a drug. We don't knock ours down at all for the regular trimming....

More info on the stingray touch pool in this thread:

I know of an incident where the woman trimming barbs got nailed good enough to warrant a trip to the ER. While she was there a random DR called the aquarium to ask.... "if someone were to get stung by a cow nosed ray, how would you treat them?"

We all laughed our butts off at that one. Cow nosed rays aren't native around here, and apparently the ER Doc's don't have a protocol for treating their injuries.

That's why this thread is very important if you're a ray owner...

Scary to think they waited long enough to trim the barb that there was enough of a fresh tip to do damage.
