Whoever told you gsp and large cichlids mix has no business advising people on fish. Gsp grow relatively slowly compared to most large cichlids and require completely different water. Also add in much different temperment and I promise it will not last long term. If you are set on buying one go for it but just know everyone except the guy making money from selling you the fish says it is a bad idea

Basically set it up like a salt tank. High ph from crushed coral agrogite (spelling) and depending on gps size and what the water it is in now just get something to check salinity and as it grows increase salinity. Mine came from a lfs at 2" and was in freshwater. Over the course of a year it grew to about 3.5" and I got the sg to 1.022 which is pretty much full salt water. I didnt run protein skimmer or anything like that. Only differences I made was to keep ph high by using "live rock" and crushed coral substrate and buy marine salt not aquarium salt for freshwater fish. They are super interesting fish and make excellent pets of you care for them properly. Interesting fact about gsp: they actually can get highly depressed and die from boredom. I was constantly adding moving and removing stuff to keep him amused and the way they inspect anything new is fun to watch

And I dont have mine anymore. It was my ex girlfriends and she took him but left me her stupid chinchilla smh. I will certainly be getting another someday. One of my dream tanks would be a gsp reef tank but I hear they can be nippy toward corals which doesmt shock me since mine used to nibble on pieces of live rock

I kept mine in a reef tank and it was fine. Just stay away from clams and sps corals. And don't expect shrimps or crabs to survive long
