Hey all so an old friend who randomly received a puffer fish recently for his birthday decided he was keeping the little guy in a 5 gallon tank by himself instead of putting it with his other fish. Next thing i know when i'm looking at this crazy little guy my friend says go ahead and have him i don't want it and will probably just let it die. Sooooo now i have some unidentified puffer by himself in my 27gal Med tank that i know nothing about. I was just wondering if someone could ID this little guy for me and give me some info on raising them, feeding/tankmates/growth that would be awesome! iv never had one of these guys before and iv heard they are mean so i'm holding off putting him with my monsters. Any info would be great! Puff1.JPGPuff2.JPG

Looks like a Fahaka to me as well. Very big, up to 18", and very temperamental. Eats hard foods like snails while small like this then clams once she's bigger. Nice score. I actually prefer the brown coloration from being stresses than their regular happy coloring. :)

It is a "dragon puffer fish" (based on the coloration and the hump in the back). Dragons get about 8" long and are fairly lazy unless they're eating. They like meaty foods and often don't play well with other fish.

It's a Humpback puffer (Tetraodon Palembangensis). Needs to be by itself but due to their inactivity they can be kept in a 40 breeder.

And to clarify for the OP, dragon puffer = humpback puffer.

Yup, its a good old palembang puffer, a true lurker which is also a piscivore by nature, so in other words do not put other fish in there with him unless you want them gone...

Give him a cave or two as some cover as they do like to hide, also giving him a smooth sand substrate can make them feel more comfortable...

As for feeding, be prepared to do frozen foods, as you most likely wont get him onto pellets. Infact, i never managed to get mine on pellets during the time i kept my pair till i sold them off...

But yeah, just so you know, you've basically adopted a pet rock, since this species is really really inactive except during feeding...
