Puffer is ill please help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great that you listed the temp as well, coz at 85'F = almost 30'C which is very warm even for a puffer, so by bringing it down to 78'F - 25'C seems like a better choice...

If hes perked up though, just keep an eye on him and maybe ease off the meds for a little bit... if anything, you can maybe just add a little epsom salt (if you feel he may benefit from flushing out his system of any possible remaining IP's)

I would also break up his feeding schedule and feed every other day just to give his system sometime to digest food etc...

Last but not least the hair, i can see its on the puffer, just not sure if its wrapped around? Either way, i'm guessing it could be irritating the puffers skin, which is why there seems to be bits of the puffers slime coat stuck to it... so maybe if possible, try holding it in the net underwater and see if you can carefully remove it???

You were right that the hair wasn't wrapped around him. Once he was feeling up to par he swam through the bubbles and got it off himself and I removed it. I've done a couple more water changes and he is at about 90% I don't know if I added to much of the mess or it was just the temp but after two days he has gone back to normal.

Could be the cocktail of meds in the tank that made him fee worse for wear, so good hear your puffers feeling better, now just see how he goes and hopefullt with just clean water he'll make a 100% recovery...

Last night we removed him from his tank, because I finally decided to add sands we drained about 80% of the water out of the tank, cleaned the sand really well added it to the tank and then refilled with clean water. We let it settle for a while and then put him back. Now he is much more active, he is staying his normal tannish color, and went back to hunting for snails. I put the carbon back in the tank and cut out the mess. He did have a normal pellet feces today too so I think it's safe to knock off the meds for a while, but as always I'll keep a good eye on him and thanks as always for your advice. :)

^ great to hear, and its with your type of dedication to your fish he got better, so glad i could help :)
