After seeing a GSP at a LFS I became intersted in getting a puffer for myself. I did some research an decided dwarf puffers seem like a good starting point, plus their cute. :)

What I would like to do is plant a 29 gallon tank an then once it is cycled add 3-5 DPs, 6-8 months later I might add 3 ottos too.

What I'd like to know is:

1) What are some good plants, low light if possible, that will grow tall an break the puffers line of sight from one another? I read swords get tall but can take over a tank... would that be a problem? Or should I just ditch the planted tank idea an fill it with fake plants?

2) Will a max of 5 puffers an 3 ottos be too much for a 29 gallon (30" x 12" x 18") with dense planting and at least 1 cave per fish? Would probably use small sized cichlids stones from Big Al's, or terra cotta pots. I figure that is about 5 gallons a puffer.

3) Lastly, or at least all I can think of at the moment, would an AC50(200GPH) be adequate filtration? Everything I read says DPs are messy eater an poop machines so I dont mind buying a larger filter if necessary.

Any advice or suggestions would be great, thanks.

I think its a good stock. Filtration is fine too. For plants you can trey some java ferns, anacharis, java moss, C. Wendtii, aponogetons, anubias etc

I think you can actually fit in a couple more DPs or Ottos

Guess that would be good if my male to female ratio was off :naughty:

Thanks Pufferpunk I was hoping to get some input from you, everyone here seems to respect your opinion... however im afraid I dont understand what you are trying to tell or show me.

I read that 1:2 male to female ratio is desired, also understand it is difficult to sex them when they are not full grown.

Perhaps you could elaborate?

Thanks.

I was just trying to help you to sex them, since you want multiple puffers in your system.

I see, thank you.

Do you think 5 puffers an 3 ottos is too much for a 29g planted?

And would all male or all females work? or something like 1 male an 4 females? Or if I happen to get 2 males an 3 females would i need to get another female?

I think as much as possible you want to try avoiding getting all of the same sex puffers to help ease aggravation between them... since if i remember correctly, the males will literally fight to the death..
