Puffer Problem Solved/New Problem...FAIL!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see what I should do. Somehow I will make a spare 5 gallon tank into a "shrimp farm"lol then transfer the adults to maybe another tank. What tools will i need? By this i mean food wise, filter, air supply....etc Thanks a million!

btw never heard of cherry shrimp, i will look them up. Also I have never seen mysis shrimp sold alive.

You will never be able to breed cherry's or ghosts fast enough in a 5g tank to sustain either one of those fish.

I would just buy some frozen krill and dangle it in front of them. Fish are curious. Fish eat everything. My lionfish hand fed from me the first day I had him.

+1 for issues with lions and aggressive/nippy fish. +2 for your decision to keep the lion.

As far as getting a fish off live food: http://www.**************.com/forum/library/feeding/problems-feeding-your-puffer/

Just substitute any fish for the word, "puffer".

there is good info on breeding shrimp... not mysis specificaly, but techniques are pretty much the same.

http://www.aquaculturestore.com/swinverts.html sell live mysids and shore shrimp (both good as they live in salt therefore dont polute tank when not eaten) though its a small veriety of mysids (max out under 1/2" i believe)

http://www.reed-store.com/shop.cfm/Mysid-Shrimp/Mysid-Shrimp/ larger mysids (max out around 1/2-1" i think)

Thanks for the info guys, I have frozen krill in my freezer. Thanks for the point's fleshy lol. Also thank s puffer and kevin for the reliable info you've guys been giving me for the past few days. Also is their a certain time of the day to best ry feeding the lion? He kinda likes to lay on the back of the glass in quarantine.....

Hunger strikes are not unusual for larger fish. That being said, it sounds like he is in an undecorated QT...this is probably stressful, and part of the reason he wont eat.

Like I said...under good conditions, he will eat. If he is a larger fish, he can go awhile without it. So dont stress it. Just drop something smelly right in front of his nose. (Garlic/selecon enrichment might help with this as well) He is likely to give it a go sooner or later. GL...keep us in the loop.

WHat do you mean by undecorated? I have a large pvc in thier that he looks like he can fit....but soars above it. Right now he is in the middle of the tank yawning and swimming.
Ok well im gonna try feeding him again...i would try dropping the foods in...but then I have to retrieve them. This is why i use the acrylic stick (very hard to get the krill on lol)
I should have peaceful fish like some large chromis in thier eating anything left over.....but I think the lion is best by himself in the qt.

Yes...sorry I just didnt know what your QT was like.

If he seems healthy other than not eating, he probably is. Make sure h2o quality is good...and then just wait it out. He will come round. They are little piggies, and like most other large SW fish, fairly hardy if basic needs are met.

thanks...btw yesterday i gave up and just threw in a krill in the tank...and bam he took one! But that was it...at least he had something frozen
