Stressing any puffer to the point that is it so terrified it puffs, is bad. Some puffers puff just for the heck of it. A puffer that puffs out of water/with air, is in danger of not being able to expell the air by itself, so it hangs helplessly upside-down, until it dies.

i didnt make it puff myself. the light came on and he overeacted when my face was right there and shot behind the heater. the he got stuck and puffed. i moved the heater and he got out and depuffed. he was in the water dont worry. and hes fine now

my gf said that she read that gsp will puff just for kicks.....
yesterday one of our gsp puffed.... then a few hours later it up and died.... (its had some red where one of its fins meets the body since we got it... everything else was fine so who knows)

huh... ive never heard that they would puff for the heck of it. i think that it is very dangerous for them to puff. since they dont have to puff as often in brackish waters i dont think they are as able to and thats why its harmful for them. but thats just me

Except for the unatural act of puffing in air while being taken out of the water, I can't imagine it being all that bad for them. I mean, they evolved this for defense, so I can't see more of them dying from puffing than dying by predation otherwise it would be a pretty useless defense.
