Puffer tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't push your luck. No long-finned fish in with puffers please.

As far as introducing them into the tank, should they go in towards the beginning or the end to try and subdue any territorial issues that may be present?

You should have a heavily decorated tank with lots of broken lines of sight. Put in the most meek/delicate species 1st & the more aggressive species (puffers) last. Are you going to fishless cycle? If you do (which I highly recommend), then cycle the tank at whatever SG the fish you are interested in are being kept at (unfortunately, usually FW). then you can either keep the tank at that SG until your tank is fully stocked or raise it & drip-acclimate all new additions to that SG.

Yepp. Fishless cycle all the way. Thats a good idea about fully stocking it, then raising the SG. That will work wonderfully. I was thinking lots of plants (mostly fake) and some driftwood as far as decoration goes. This should give everything a good place to hide. I will be going out tomorrow to get the PVC to plug the bulkheads, then water goes in and we are operational captain. Thanks everyone! I will be around, so any questions or comments you have, I would love to hear them. Im sure I will be back with more questions and updates, also.

Be careful with driftwood. If it's not cured, it can leech tannins into the tank, turning the water brown, softening the water & lowering the pH very acidic.

Well, I really dont want to deal with that, so I may just not use that. We'll see. I still have to get the plugs done and get water in it to cycle. Then I will deal with the decorations. I never got any decisions made as far as lighting goes, though. I currently have (2) 2x96W PC fixtures. They were made for saltwater, but with a bulb replacement, that can easily be fixed. Will these lights work, or should I get different ones?

I love the color of PCs over FW tanks.
