Puffer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on MFK... anything under 100gal :) but in my eyes, i think anything under a 30gal is a small tank. but before i was on MFK, i thought i had a big tank. so i guess its all relative.

but back to the skimmer thing, which i think is why you asked what is classed as a small tank?

if you feel that you can cope doing big Wc's on a big tank, and can afford to do so, you can. but 25% of a 400L tank is 100L, which is apparently worth about 20$. even if it cost half that, its still 10$ every week, literally down the drain. with a skimmer you can do less freequent WCs, and save money.

for most people, anything under a 30 is considered a nano.

ok thanks, he woudl either be going into a 30 or 50...more than likely the 30...I would probably get the protein skimmer...
The puffer has been acting weird...he does thing thing when he curls up into a ball and lays at the bottom but when I came home from work he was doing this and attached to the filter...when I came up to the tank he came to greet me and was sooo grey :(...one day he will look great and seem fine and the net he will be like this, he worries me.

do a wc. sounds like it is stressed. GSP's should have a pearly white stomach. but it will go grey/black when they're not happy.

try re-arranging the tank. they get bored really easily as they are intelligent fish. put more decor in the tank, or move stuff around. siphon out any crap under rocks and things. theres always crap hiding under there... and it will obviously affect your water quality. then do a WC.

try upping the SG a little too. remember no more than 0.002 per week :)

haha yeah! now that I know how to use my hydrometer I will!
I have actually meant to do a good cleaning on the tank these last couple days...I may actually do that right now! haha. He will probably be going into the 30 a little sooner than I expected. I have made my final decision for who is going in what tanks...(I got 3 new[to me] tanks this week) 65 - oscar and bichir 50 - my rbp's are going into and the 30 - that the rbps are in is going to be my salt tank.

:O I was just cleaning the algae off the inside of the glass...to make it easier I took off the lid...anyway he was on the other side of the tank going up and down the glass like normal...when out of nowhere he made a greak for it! He jumped over the glass landed on the shelf his tank is on instantly puffed up..(which is cute but not cool) and he was squeeking! could not believe it...he is fine now though, just thought I would share this.

yeah they cant half jump... mine managed to jump through a gap as wide as he was. so they got good aim on thier side too. but i was too late. found poor ollie dried up being kicked around by the cats :irked:. keep all gaps coverd.

its a good job that you managed to get the air out of him when he puffed. it usually causes major problems, and even death... so you should use a cup or bowl to catch him, if you didnt already know.

if your puffer is pacing the glass its probably bored, and needs something to do. if you have ghost shrimp available put some in for him to chase. it'll be good for his teeth too.

a 30 for your GSP is a good choice. if you have the 55 id do that though... you could have tankmates then... maybe.:naughty: but the 30 will be fine, mine was in a 30, but dont get attatched to tankmates, theres more chance that your puffer will snap, and kill. mine would only live with a common clown. it ate lots of fish. including a really pretty pacific dwarf angel.

id also set it up as a brackish aquarium too. at around 1.010sg, and build it up to marine. its really interesting to see your puffer progress to adulthood.

yeah he is just above .010 right now...I want to get him up to full marine for the move to the big tank.

There is a ghost shrimp in there already with him and he has nothing to do with it!...he isnt pacing so much now that I re arranged the tank for him though.

Oh and he got all the air out himself

i found pacing to be normal for these fish. Mine will watch the ferrets in their cage and then do laps around the tank. he is about 3 inches now. If the snails start reproducing in my oscar tank i'd be glad to send you some for free, but I wanted to keep them on hand because the puffer needs them every week or so, krill can also help wear down their teeth. Here is a person on ebay that sells the snails I have personally bought from him. http://cgi.ebay.com/50-aquatic-snai...ryZ20759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Most of the information given on here is right on. If your tank is to simple your fish will get board and sulk on the bottom of the tank as you described. He should not be gray, their bellies will turn black occasionally which is normal. If they stay black you have a problem. Aquarium salt and marine salt are different and some people make that mistake. Mine wont stay still for me to get a good picture they always blurr. If that picture is of you, your as cute as the puffers ;) GL

glad to hear he is doing better after that disaster of jumping out! ive feared that since i have upgraded mine. i decided to go with no cover on the tank for now until i get sick of the look. i like being able to view my entire tank from above but i do plan on having a lid on there. what ever SPG they are at now i would cycle the tank at that level, but add in the .002 you would raise for that week, that way the beneficial bacteria that is in brackish water will form. also put a sponge from the filter in the filter cycling the new tank, it will help speed the process up a little. also if you put in a decoration that was basically directly in the way of water flow that will do the same as it will have the BB on it and help speed up the cycling process
