puffers need hard foods?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Those are good but I'd freeze 1st & then thaw for feeding.

Both excellent foods but puffers need a more varied diet. Check the link above, for other food options.

Yeah, puffers are harder to keep up than people think they are... even the not-so-big ones. Similar to most loaches, They are scaleless, so they cannot be treated with most treatements for ich, etc. Also, most puffers (although all puffers have a unique temperment- similar to people) are fin-nippers and sometimes territorial. I doubt this person's

the lazy sort

simply because their researching, but puffers may not be right for you. Give it some deep thought.

If you decide to get a puffer and don't want to feed them snails, you can always get some clove oil or finquel and clip it's teeth/beak every 4-6 months or as needed. Good luck!

Knocking a fish out & clipping it's teeth, is always risky & should only be done on fish where it has been bought with overgrown teeth, the teeth got out of hand due to the keeper not being aware they needed hard foods or they keep a species where it is almost impossible to feed it enough crunchy foods, as the SAP or A modestus species. Any other puffer should never have the necessity for dentistry, due to lazyness. I haven't fed a snail to any of my puffers for years. There are many, many alternatives.

what exactly does wearing of the beak down mean. does it mean daily feedings of hard food to keep it down or just once in a long while. its like cleaning up a dogs crap in the house everyday (not something i experience but just saying).
wish hikari would make some puffer foods. that would be nice.

and puffer punk. what do you think a figur8 is. fresh or brackish? just wondering.

F8s are mostly found in FW rivers in the wild, making frequent trips into BW estuaries. After a decade-long study though, it has been determined that in captivity, they live longest in low-end BW--SG of around 1.005--up to 18+ years!

Some species of puffers need a daily supply of crunchy foods. Others are good with 2-3 feedings of hard-shelled foods/week. I usually mix it up with softer foods, like worms & harder foods like shrimp, every other feeding. I do not feed my puffers every day though. Once their teeth are overgrown however, there is no amount of crunchy foods that will wear them down. At that point, they must be hand-trimmed by their keeper.

Hi, is ghost shrimp ok as an alternative to snails to trim down the beak? How bout ramshorn snail is this ok? I have 6 green spotted puffers (At last, I got some! But I also prefer dwarf or freshwater puffers though). I have fed them tubifex worms and ghost shrimp and currently breeding ramshorn snail.

How many months will it take for them to mature and are green spotted puffers ok in BW for life?

i buy 4lb bags of frozen mussels in the shell from walmart for around $10, and it lasts forever, and all you have to do is pull one outta the freezer and toss it in the tank. i feed frozen market shrimp daily, and either eartworms or the mussels every other day.

I would definately defrost those mussells before tossing in the tank. As a matter of fact, I soak them in liquid vitamin water. Ghost shrimp are OK, as is krill & plankton but nothing beats having to scrape meat out of a shell. Ghost shrimp are basically non-nutritious though, unless gut-loaded with somtheing.
