That was a massive arapaima.Hey oddball,can you tell how big it was from the size of its skull.I have seen a lot of arapaima's at the fish markets in Brazil and Peru and that is the biggest head I have ever seen.It must have been around 10 feet is my guess.Awesome find.

The fish's total body length to skull length proportion changes as the animal ages. A rough guess is that, at this size, the pima's skull (maxillae to operculum edge) would have been 1/10th of the animal's total length. Now, consider the average adult's hand size in S. Amer. I'd guess the length of the pinky tip to the radius promenance to be roughly 5". In marking that length, I came up with 17" as the length of the skull. That would make the pima out to have been roughly 170" or 14ft in length.

MASSIVE! shame we can never find that kinda size alive anymore! unless we GROW THEM OURSELVES! hint hint!
 
damn i wish i could buy one of those or a model atleast.
 
amazing! and check out that bilateral symmetry! I would love to see a 14' arapaima in person.
