small ponds in the shallows near the shore. put a worm on a hook and just drag it along the shore line and the fish will grab it and hold on even though they are not hooked, you can pull them out. i did this and have a couple pumpkinseeds in my tank.
 
Yeah boober, small hook, and worms will the trick along the shore line. If that doesn't work go get a husky jerk bait made by rapala, the one u need is the smallest one they make it's about a inch and half, all u need to do is cast it out and jerk it in. I used it alot to full my tank up with rock bass, yellow perch, 3 different type of sunnies, and of coarse small bass(LM & SM). That was when I was into natives

That technique is probably not legal in most areas.
 
small ones are near the shore in the day, larger ones stay near the bottom of the lake.
 
Whenever I try and catch fish like this I use a cast net. They are not that expensive $20-$25 for a small on. It is easy to catch fish like this and you don't have to hook them through the lip.
