Pump and benefits of increasing flow rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
uh oh... are you saying that my 10x turnover through my sump is actually screwing me over? Sump is only filtration and there is a fair bit of bio media in there

Perfect for what? I don't think I've ever run 10* turn over on any tank, even my current overstocked 400L and have never had a problem with water quality. I'm only going to run around 4* on my 2000L tank.

OP if you aren't having problems with your water then increasing the flow will simply burn more power. If you want your filter to catch more physical waste then a powerhead in the tank to stir up any dead spots and move the waste towards the overflow may work better than more flow thru the sump.

i ran my 100g sump half full of water so about 50g of water through a 5500gph pump and never saw amonia spike or nitrite feeding close to 1lb of food at a time. guess i was only 107 too many turnover per hour for effecient bio? ive always shot for 8-10x turnover through filters for my display. the porus nature of bio media will restrict flow through the inside of the media anyways. ive always used seachem matrix and maybe thats unique to that media, but i know they say it works well due to near anerobic conditions in the middle of it while the surface is more porus andflows more. how could a canister with a volume around a gallon do anything for bio if it pushes 500gph? i know my big sump was overkill but if you guys really mean the volume of a sump should turn over like 3x... ok?

thanks guys really appreciate the inputs.
This tank has 2 overflow pipes of 2 inches each.
so far I'm using a Rio 2700 for it. thinking of replacing the pump with a Rio HF 17?
one concern is my sump is only 75 gallon for this tank?
but bio load should be quite heavy, i have 3 18-20 inch asian aros in this tank. and feeding them quite heavily.

I'm surprised no one has asked, what kind of fish do you have?
Some fish require different flow rates and current . With 2 X 2" overflows you have any number of options, whether you have a 20 gal sump or 200 gal, The overflows, and pump size are physical determiners here, but the fish are most important.
Fish from fast flowing rivers require a higher oxygen saturation, which is provided by current, cascading water, and riffles.
If, for example you have bettas or anabantids, or other slow water species a small pump is all that is needed.
If you have Tomocichla or Chuco genus cichlids the current should be high.
Most aquarists keep something in between.
I keep Tomocichla seiboldi and asfraci which should be given highly oxygenated water to be healthy, on the asfraci tank (a150 gal) I use a 2400gph hour pump, with venturi tubes attached.
The young seiboldi are growing out in a 75 gal with about 1200 gph and venturis.
I also find current has tendency to curb aggression in faster flowing waters with these kinds of fish.
