I was away for several days visiting relatives over Christmas returning this evening. Evidently, the pump in my 92g bowfront failed while I was away. All of the fish, except one, perished. My Senegal Bichir survived (which is probably why they have survived 200 million years)

I lost - 1 8" Green Severum, Breeding Pair of Geophagus Brasiliensis, 3 juvenile Nicaraguan cichlids, 3 8" Bala Sharks, 1 6" Rainbow Shark, 1 L52 Pleco, 4 Pictus Cats and, last but certainly not least, my 7" Synodontis Angelicus.

I was looking forward to seeing them when I returned home this evening. I let them down. I am gutted.

The polypterus came to the glass within 2 minutes of my entering the room, practically begging me to get him out of the tank. I have a 14g biocube in which I was unsuccessfully trying to breed some albino tiger barbs. I moved the tiger barbs into another community/grow-out tank and transplanted the bichir into that tank. Initially, he laid on the bottom panting but now is showing more activity. I hope he makes it.

Now, having removed the deceased, I am syphoning out the water and beginning the daunting task of cleaning out the tank.

No New Years celebration for me tonight....

So sorry for your loss...:( Your bichir will most likely pull through. You just need to give him clean water and make sure he does not get any infection from being in contact with dead fish in the same water for a few days. He is an obligate air breather that is why he most likely have survived. How did they die exactly? Loss of power? There's no extra aeration?

Having lived through an extinction type event only two years ago after holiday travels, I fully understand how you feel. Mine was after thanksgiving and my son was saying dad, nothing is moving in the tank :(. In my case it was the heater that failed.

Chalk another one up for ancients. Over hundreds of millions of years, they laugh at failed pumps. Sorry for your loss tho. Recently had a community tank crash from disease.
