Pump Failed while Away for Christmas - Lost My Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; Having kept fish thru the decades when power filters were not reliable for various reasons i got into the practice of running some sort of air pump powered bubblers in all my tanks. This practice has helped on numerious occasions. Some of the early HOB filters i used would lose prime if the power was off for a short time and for reasons that were unclear. The air powered hob filters, sponge filters or just bubble stones have kept tanks going during such events.
I also do not feed when away for less than a week. This also helps in the event of a power failure.
Outside of the air powered bubblers the next helpful practice has been to understock my tanks. I have not lost fish during several days of power failure and no back up generator sine going this route.

Skjl47, if you have no generator how did you maintain your tank temp 80+? I find it almost impossible to do without power,

Hello; I did not maintain the regular tank temps. This happened in early December with low temps in the 30's F. I was able to keep the house in the low 50's with a propane heater. The fish survived and I slowly warmed them up after the power came back. I keep my tanks in the mid 70's F.
