so would it be easier to just have one large sump? What would happen if one pump failed with the equalizing tube thing?

If you had two sumps with a balance tube connecting them and only one pump operating in one of the sumps, the water would transfer from the sump with out a working pump over to the sump with the working pump thru the balance tube.
