Pump for a 225 Gallon

so would it be easier to just have one large sump? What would happen if one pump failed with the equalizing tube thing?

One large wet/dry - sump with two smaller pumps would simplfy this proposed set up.

If you had two sumps with a balance tube connecting them and only one pump operating in one of the sumps, the water would transfer from the sump with out a working pump over to the sump with the working pump thru the balance tube.
 
Harbor freight has a few pumps rated at 1000 and more an hour, they will last a couple years with a little care also there was a web site called fountainmontian.com or somthing like that that had some low cost ones.

I'm using a rio 2500. And it's only $37+ change at bigalsonline.com on my 225g.
 
really? That just seems low compared to what I've heard the water cycling should be. I assume your water stays pretty clean?
 
My water's very clean. Just tested it yesterday and nitrites and nitrates are 0. I'm using a eheim power head and a fluval 404, just incase. A wet/dry that's rated for 300g.
