Before you look into a pump, you need to make sure your overflows can the output of the pump.

I.e. if you pumping 3000gph into your tank, but you overflows can only handle 2000gph your gonna have some problems.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Using this calculator:
http://reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php

For 2250, I get roughly 2" diameter pipes are needed. For 3600, roughly 2.5" pipes are needed. And for 5800, 3.15" pipes are needed

The holes already drilled in the tank are 1.5" and 2" so I should be good if I use multiple holes, correct?

Since the holes are in the bottom, I plan on running the plumbing straight up to the top of the tank and putting a strainer on it. That way, the water should flow right into the pipe and pretty much go straight down into the sump. The pump will have to work harder for the returns as they'll be on the other side of the tank and will have more bends. Because of this, I'm thinking I'll need a bigger pump.

Right now I'm eyeballing the reeflo hammerhead which does 5800gph max. It's only $20 more than the barracuda that does 4500gph. I figure my head height will be around 5' not counting bends in piping.
