I was looking at a Fluval 404 owner's manual and they list a dif pump output and filter circulation both in gal/hour. Pump output is listed as 340g/h and filter circulation is 225g/h. What gives? What's the difference, and which one is the one I use to figure out turnover rate?
My thoughts are....
A pumps GPH rating can be lowered by many things. The pump on it's own with nothing holding it back could be 340, but after pulling water over the rim, pushing through the filter media, then pumping it back up to the tank, it will really only turn over 225 ish GPH. When I figure filters, I ALWAYS use the lowest numbers to ensure I have it covered at the lowest possible performance, let alone at it's best!
Most manufacturers rate their filters and pumps this way, as it is the industry standard.
Pump output is measured with no restrictions on the input/output of the pump.
Filter circulation is measured by using the recommended amount of new filter media/placement order, filter installation height, and exact same lengths of input and output hoses.
Filter circulation is the number you need to look at for helping to decide which filter you may need for your tank. Of course there are other variables that need to be considered; Heavy stocking levels, planted or not, etc.
