wait wait wait wait wait...so you guys are telling me these things are approx 10500 gph? are you kidding me?

Ok, so I got here late. And you just wised up.

Lotsa no-no's in this thread...

Btw, those will fetch a nice price in your area at this time of the year. Use the money to buy a much smaller pump. Keep in mind that the noise produced by pumps is proportional to the size of the pump (relatively speaking). If your circulation is toward the low end, the noise will be at a minimum and your wife will let you keep the tank just a little longer. :D

Just for a little trivia, my 18,000g swimming pool operates using a 1hp pump. My goldfish hate the amount of current it puts out.

I think that may be a problem in "dimming" the electricity going to the motor. I do not believe it works that way. You would giving the motor a controlled "brownout". I may be wrong.

You may want to try simply adding a tee to the return with a shut off going back to the sump, that you can easily open up to reduce the flow into the tank with out taxing/burning out the motor. As a side note do not put a shut off on the return alone to reduce the flow, that will also stain the motor.
Let it run free, baby.

i agre , this way the fillter gets to see more of the warter

Chompers, whats a 'nice price'? Because I want to have something sufficiant for my tank...

Thank you very much. Happy to hear I dont have 30 lb paper weights...

In order to control the speed of an ac motor (rpm) and not waste energy you need a Variable Speed Drive. Which would be very expensive. I think diverting the unwanted flow back to the sump would be best.

Here, they will get $75 to $100 each. Up there, you should be able to get more for them because they are harder to find. With the sale of both, you should be able to purchase a pump that will work.
