I've figured out that my Mag Drive 3600 is not going to cut the mustard, it won't push the head and it's too darned loud.

I have two Ocean Clear canisters and one Pentair 40 watt up in my closed loop system. Based on the pressure guage the 3600 was pushing against about 16 feet of head (6.5 - 7.0 psi). The UV runs best at a maximum of 1500 GPH.

I want something fairly quiet and effecient.
I've been looking at Reeflo pumps so far.

The Tarpon (pressure biased) pumps 786 gph at 16' head and only uses 188 watts and is supposed to be pretty quiet.

The Barracuda (flow biased) pumps 1800 gph at 16' head and uses 237 watts.

Or the Wahoo (pressure biased) pumps around 1350 gph at 16' head and uses about 275 watts.

I'd love to hear thoughts on these and other pumps that you may recommend for this application before I shell out that kind of money.

Thanks in advance!

All I can say is that I have the Dart (even though it's not on the list, it's similar) and it's my favorite pump that I've owned. I can't even hear it over the little giant that I have in an enclosed stand. It's damn near silent.

Good to hear that they really are quiet. Do you guys know if they can be mounted vertically?

although 1500 gph is the max flow for the uv it is probably way to fast to kill the bugs..........probably should have a by pass on it to slow the flow down

I could also throttle the discharge returning to the tank. ;)

It is a pretty tall unit but 1500 does sound pretty quick. I was thinking around 1000 maybe?

The mag was hitting 6.5psi at around 300 gph flow. Will the psi increase with a pump that can push more flow?

We love our Hammerhead. It is a true workhorse. It's about 8 1/2" x 16". We live in a remote area, so I bought a second Hammerhead for a spare pump. It's sitting on a high shelf in the filter room. It's too heavy for me to lift off the shelf. It needs to be mounted on a "secure immobile foundation". There is no way we could mount this monster vertically. I can't speak for the smaller pumps. I suggest calling Reeflo and asking them 877/378-6798

Here is their site. You can check out their installation manuals. http://www.reeflopumps.com/productoverview.html

Our Pentair 40 Watt UV sterilizer is connected to our Fluval FX5 (925 pgh). It has performed flawlessly at that flow rate. You're going to like your Pentair. Their quartz bulbs do not need to be replaced as frequently as other UV brands.

Thanks Pacu Mom.

I've been exchanging emails with the owner this morning (Chris) and the guys has gone above and beyond the call of duty to answer my questions.

He's recommending the Barracuda model based on the setup information I gave him.
Time to find a supplier with the right price!

Best price I could find today: $257.99 http://www.aquariumguys.com/barracuda-aquarium-hp-pump.html

Maybe they charge more for shipping??:)

I ordered my dart from aquariumguys and they were cheaper on the pump and shipping than the other places I looked. I would recommend using them, they did a great job.
