I figured there would be a sticky on pump reviews. No luck. Then searched - no luck. Looking for reviews on pumps. I've normally used mag drives. 9.5, 18, 24 and 36. I've had all but the 9.5 fail within a couple of years. They were also really loud and not very effective with power consumption. I am in the market for something 1000-1500 gph. I feel like external is probably the way to go. I need quiet - it'll be in my living room. I'd like something with good power consumption.

What are the implications of a DC pump? Anyone?

DC pumps stop pumping if they run dry, so if your water level runs too low the pumps won't burn itself out. You can also put a gate valve on your return to control the pump without causing damage to the pump. I use the jecod dct pumps which are just a newer version of the ones you listed and have had good short term results. I run 2x DCT 6000 on my 300 gallon tank. People have had them die out over time, others no problem.

By design you can control the flow on DC pumps - in my experience no need for valves if you have a DC pump.

Not running on max gives you the power if your situation calls for it, and saves and doesn't waste energy if you don't. I've seen at least 4 brands running non-submerged and they are very quiet.

Yeah, I'm a fan.

I had blow off valves back in the day with my mag drives where I needed it. Wasted energy for the most part, but at least I diverted it back across the filter media.

I did read that when they say it has to run submerged it's a little misleading. It's just got to have water lol. I think I'll try one of these.

I got two iwaki's with the tank I bought, but they're old and I doubt I want to trust them. So I'll definitely order one of these DCs.

Thanks for the input.

I've not used Jebao but many like it on this site, especially for the price.

Look into waveline second generation if you don't mind spending a bit more too. Just another option. I wouldn't go with the 5 reviews on Amazon LOL

I guess I will run two. 800gph maybe. Dial both of them down a little bit so if one goes I can dial the other one up and be ok. Thanks for the manufacturer suggestions guys!

I'll keep this here too... Hard pvc plumbing vs flex tubing. I like the clean look of pvc. I don't like the 90* turns causing more pressures. Thoughts?
