Pump size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got one of these pumps and it is very nice. I got the most powerful one.
I like that it has an O ring seal on the outlet. Pump seems pretty quiet. I am starting to believe that paying more for a pump these days doesn't really mean quality.
I have been through too many expensive pumps. Some recommend Jaebo but let's face it. It's all made in China. Jaebo's didn't look any better than others.
This is the one I just set up today. Of course they are on sale - Black Friday.
Amazon.com: fishkeeper 90W 3435GPH(13003L/H) Aquarium Water Pump, DC 24V Ultra Quiet Submersible Pump with 19.7ft High Lift, 17.0ft Power Cord, 20 Speeds Adjustable for Fish Tank/Pond/Fountains/Sump/Hydroponic : Pet Supplies

I use Sicce, I find them to be quiet, and reliable, and relatively inexpensive, some have 3 year warranties.
There are many flow rate sizes available.
I know some people like the variable speed pumps (more expensive), but I just use a PVC ball valve from the hardware store to control flow.
Much lesss expensive.

Since I keep riverine species, I require a strong flow (current)

The one above has been working on my 180 gal with 125 gal sump, 24/7 since 2020.
A feature I prefer that Sicce has are fittings that work with standard PVC from the hardware store
Most (not all) of the pump failures I have experienced seemed to be related to the controllers. So a pump without a controller such as yours, may last a long time. I just like the ability to adjust speeds.

What kind of overflow and drain sizes are you running? How high is the water being returned and are you sble to turn pump down or is it running maxed out

235 gal tank. 50 gal sump (~40 gal. during use) 1 1/2" overflow and 1 1/2" main drain. Gate valve on main drain to adjust flow and level in the return box.
2 return pumps with 3/4" OD tubing.
I have this pump turned down quite a bit. It's pretty powerful. Smallest barbed outlet on the pump is 3/4" so I had to heat up my tubing with a hair dryer to get it attached. It's pumping up almost 5 feet through about 5.5' of tubing.
Pump works great.

cool great info thank you. I started building my 180 today. I’ll post some pictures tomorrow i forgot to get some today. I’m going to do dual 1.5” durso drains through the left side and I haven’t made up my mind if I want to run dual return pumps or just 1

I’m making the tanks total length 7’ but I’m bringing the side walls in 3.5” on both sides so I can have the plumbing hidden at the ends and none showing anywhere and I went with sides so I could bring tank close to the wall

sounds good. If I could do it over again I would have located the overflow box to the exterior to give more room to the interior. I would construct the box of thicker acrylic (3/8" , 1/2"?). I have just read some things where people have had leaks at the seams on their overflows. Maybe I'm over thinking. My sump is 1/4". But getting the box out of the tank would be my thinking on a future build.

The way mine is going to be set up is just 2 elbows that are inside the aquarium and then whatever I decide for my return/returns
