Pump Sizing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
JK47 JK47 Looks like the one problem I will have is if I want to run eductors. I found reefers using them but sounds like you need pumps that can handle more pressure than the super dart. I would have to run a barracude essentially. Probably easier to just get some powerheads/wavemakers to increase flow.

Is your goal to increase turnover through your filtration and/or increase circulation? I don't think powerheads will necessary increase flow through your filtration, and, would be hard to quantify

Increase circulation. Want to keep flow through filter at optimal rate for biological and mechanical filtration.

I see. For what it's worth I have a smaller 260gallon peninsula tank with 5 holes in the overflow for drain, return, dry pipe to run wires. I have closed loop for circulation as well. I wanted to avoid the wires. The exposed intake and loclines for the clc doesnt bother me aesthetically, but you could hide with decor as you mentioned.

On one end is the intake with strainer and the other end are two loclines. You could do something similar uf you are open the the idea of holes? 20171220_183509.jpg

Beautiful setup! Mint

DN328 DN328 Very nice. Can you please explain to me a little more of what you are doing? Sounds like you are running a sump for your bio and then closed loop just to circulate the water?

How many drains and outputs do you have inside and outside the overflow box? How long is your tank and ado you think you are getting the circulation all the way to the end?

How are you running a dry pipe for the wires? Is it just an empty pipe that lets you run wires in to the tank and then you have it above the water lines? How do you prevent risk of flooding?

Nzafi, it's a busy but I will respond later to try to answer some of your questions...

Correct; I have a sump and use socks for mechanical, bioballs (submerged) for biological and some polishing pads.

In the previous overflow box I'm basically using the Herbie method, but I also have a third, dry e-drain, kind of a blend with Bean Animal I suppose. The field goal looking T is where we split the returns that come out of the overflow box with loc-lines. It's not a good picture, but you can see where the loc-lnes come out of the weir in the picture of the full tank.

The last bulkhead is on the right where you can barely see the pipe I use to run down wires for my lights. Honestly, that was probably more trouble than it's worth, and takes away from overflow box size and space - questionable if I'd do that again. The pipe is just glued to a bulkhead and separated by acrlylic wall from the rest of the overflow box. I have no concerns about overflow. Anyway, I wanted to share the number of bulkheads I had drilled holes for.

Suctions down the pipe and pump (hidden behind the wood cover) to the floor in this picture and out the other ends in the second picture. Sorry for the bad pictures...ask away and I'll try to clarify if this doesn't make sense...
