Looks like my pump burned out. Going to take it apart later and see if I can get it running again, but otherwise need some input.

Mine came as part of a package deal with my sump, so I am not sure where to best look for a new one. I need something in the 1500gph range for a 500g aquarium.

Anyone have any favorite brands? Prefer something not obnoxiously loud if possible. Willing to spend the money for a good pump.

If by internal you mean submerged in the pump, then internal. Sorry, not sure which term fits my situation best.

Yes, that's what I mean. Don't think "internal" is the right word, my brain is tired. ;)

Only "submerged" pumps that I'm familiar with and have friends that use them are mags and quiet ones.

Thanks. Hadn't heard of Quiet One. I just found this on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-One-Lif...3O/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1322865604&sr=8-20 and slightly bigger http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-One-Lif...on/dp/B004PBALV8/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_1 -- Wondering if something like this will work, price seems good.

Will wait to hear from more MFK'ers as well.

@clockworkorange -- I am not opposed to going bigger. Mine was only 1200 GPH, so I was figuring a minimum of 1500 GPH to get better circulation. Can you go "too big?" Quiet One seems to have a pretty extensive range. My second link is a 1664 GPH example. Tell me what you think would be best -- I am trying to educate myself on this as well as get a new one. :)

Thanks!
Mike

Edit: Doing some more window browsing, looks like Mag has some bigger ranges: http://www.amazon.com/Mag-Drive-Pum...Q8/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&qid=1322866286&sr=8-37 here is a 2400 GPH, for example. Would that be too much "push"?

Mag 18 or Laguna pump. Don't go with Mag 24 or 36. They're loud, and the impeller tend to get busted. I'm not a fan of Quietone pump, due to the shaft tend to get broken.

Check out Supreme Hy-drives. They are pretty quiet. And pretty affordable for the gph they pump. You only run a 1200gph on that gar tank? Is that the only filter?

i'm just setting up my 500, 8 x 3 x 3', with an external pump, Ampmaster 3000 which pumps about 3000gph.
remember the size of your return pump output shouldn't exceed the amount of water you get from your overflow.

if you go with an in-sump or submersible pump then i like Mag drive pumps. a Mag 18 would work nice for you. if you want to stay at only 1800gph.
