You can run pumps in series, works very well. You need to match the pumps though by using the same spec pumps and preferably the same manufacturer.

I liquid cool a computer using two pumps closed loop in series.
Just remember that running pumps in series is also a way of increasing pressure. make sure the canister can theoretically cope with almost double the head of one of the pumps (assuming same models). Running pumps parallel is more efficient if the extra pressure isn't needed

^^ This is true, series increases pressure and parrallel increases flow. I was just pointing out that a statement was made that was incorrect and some might believe it as fact. And just because another is fearful of it gives more credibility to a false statement. Heck I could not bring myself to jump out a plane at altitude but others do it and enjoy something I am fearful of doing myself.

If your sump was inna cellar and you needed more flow to the upstairs tank, parrallel pumps would do you diddley and in this case either getting a pump with more head capabilities or putting an identical pump you might have in the bin in series would accomplish the same results.

Something to think about on canister filters is your not going to be able to increase flow very much with a larger pump. The canister filter has basically a fixed flow rate. The Nu-Clear canisters have 1" intake and return lines on them with a filter cartridge. Your only going to get so much flow period. From the day you set it up forward you will have less and less flow. If your looking for higher turn over you need to add another canister filter and pump (parallel). The nice thing about two separate systems is redundancy and maintenance. Only change one filter at a time, that way your not disturbing the beneficial bacteria all at once. If your filters last two months then change one out every month. That will keep everything balanced, you wont have huge swings in your water chemistry. My 2C
