Pumpkinseed Sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My green sunfish has gron from .3" to 7.5" in a little over 3 months and they get 12" full size, I would have to emagine that pumpkinseeds are very similar. Feed it cichlid food as it grows and beefheart mine love that stuff pluss some freshwater mulit-pack.

here's mine at about 7 in. got him in june he was only about 2 in. my tank is a 125 gal I have a female also and she is only 5 in. now so apparently the males grow bigger faster...

Congratulations, Im impressed, although with those credentials, you would think youd be giving advice, not asking for it Hmmm, well at any rate, its an honor to have such a learned individual in our midst. and thank you for setting me straight on that point.

LOL, like I said, I'm mostly a planted tank guy, also a bit of reefs here and there. I've dabbed in the larger cichlids and piranha but native fish are completely new to me. Isn't it funny how for the longest time you believe that tropicals are the only fish out there? There's a whole pet store right in our backyard that I've never even given thought to.

Beautiful sunfish greenearthlawns! Lovely colors!

My entire fishkeeping hobby has been devoted to everything except Natives, I am an avid fisherman, and still never considered keeping them as pets. All sunfish to me were bluegills :) . little did i know there were far more to be gained by exploring the native world. i now keep ...Dollar, Obesus, Bluespotted, OrangeSpotted ,Blackbanded, Pumpkinseed, ShadowBass, and Warmouth. as well as several species of Darter, and those dont even scratch the surface, They are mostly the smaller more manageable species for me. But since starting keeping those ive learned a lot about the other larger species, that are there that i never even knew existed.

I know what you mean!

I've been fishing my whole life, and to me there was 4 kinds of fish.
Annoying little sunfish that you wish were dead
Trout that only came around once a year
Bass/pike/walleye/everything else that is actually worth catching

I never thought that I could look to the pond behind my house to stock my aquarium. Its funny what you take for granted!

Oh well, guess I won't be getting a sunfish for the next couple months.

I was going to go ice fishing for crappie this weekend though. Any chance you could keep one of those in aquaria?

I think several people keep Crappie, the black i think is more attractive, and best to start with a small one and watch it grow. You might be surprised what you get if you go fishin, all sorts of sunfish will bite this time of year, they are just not as active, be patient, and youll get fish :)

I'm going for a little hike this afternoon.

Not sure where I'm going, but being Ontario I'm bound to cross a creek or lake now and then. I'll bring a fishing pole and some bait, see if I can't catch anything.

I'll let you know!
