Punching Holes In Fins To Reduce Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't watch the video (not enough phone battery left)
But, I think it's going to slow the fish down. I don't think it going to make the fish less aggressive.

Well that's the point I think... In regards to breeding so the male can't catch the female. Conkel is talking about male on female aggression in dovii.

I watched all the video parts to that seminar. Very interesting and educational. That whole fin punching thing is mainly for spawning. I personally would not do that to fish in my community. Maybe if I was spawning fish. I kind of feel bad doing that.

On another note , when it comes to the cichlid hobby , I think Don is the master of knowledge of cichlids and probably the most respected person in the hobby.

After recently contacting him myself , I personally did not care for his people skills very much.

Don't want this to turn into a don conkel discussion thread (been there, done that), just thought it was interesting. I also would never do this to my fish at home personally.

Don knows his cichlids. He only breeds New World cichlids nowadays, but according to him he is still the largest farming business in cichlids. I have met him personally at his Florida facility and let me say that I believe just about everything he says. I dunno, maybe it's just the cigars that makes him seem like he knows everything lol

Interesting. I never thought of even trying something like that. It does make sense though. A slowed male will have a hard time maneuvering and chasing a female with this practice. I doubt that I would try it myself. But it may be a last resort to breeding some rare species.

Not a fan of that idea at all. I think if you have to resort to those sorts of practices it may be time to re-evaluate your whole fish vs tank size conception all together.

Completely agree with this. Mutilating your animals is a sickening practice regardless if the hole fills in or whater you cut away grows back. If you want to breed large predatory fish then do what people here (and in many other places) have been doing for years and buy a very large aquarium and stick a divider in or stay away from large predatory fish if you cannot house them properly.
I know in the UK under our animal welfare laws a person intentionally mutilating their animals, regardless of the severity, would have their animals siezed and they would likely be fined or jailed, again depending on severity.

Everyone here bashes people constantly for keeping fish in aquariums that blatantly do not fit the species. Imagine someone without Conkels influence or fame coming here and saying they mutilate their fishes fins to enable breeding in a very unsuitably sized aquarium. All hell would break loose and I would imagine many senior members would get infractions or banned because it would be a flame fest.
