Punching Holes In Fins To Reduce Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All about the money, when it comes to breeding.

But here is my question: Would this change your opinion of buying fish from a person who practiced such things?

Don does what he does to make money, we do what we do because we love the fish. It's a completely different approach.

I agree completely with what DMD123 asks though. Would you still buy fish from someone who does this?

i wouldnt agree with doing this in just a home type setting but for commercial breeding purposes i dont see the harm, its not causing any pain at all to the fish and allows the female to get away easier, it never says what size tank he is keeping these fish in so no one can really say oh hes just doing this so he can keep them in too small a tank, he very well could have them in a good size tank but even in large tanks, fatalities with these guys will still occur when a huge male decides he wants to put the beat down on his girl. and hes not talking about totally mutilating the fin just poking a small hole in it so its not as water dynamic. fish do worse damage to themselves than this just swimming around in our tanks if they hit the decor wrong. as for answering the question of whether i would buy fish from someone who did this... yes, yes i would. like i said before this process does not cause any pain at all to the fish and prevents the death of another fish. Its not comparable whatsoever to something horrible like the companies dying fish purely for cosmetic reasons and causing these fish so much pain and stress that the majority of them die and the ones that do survive still arent able to live full lives

^ I agree with Sarah. I would not recommend this practice because people will try it and will want to keep these large fish in very small aquariums to breed them. I think as hobbyist we should encourage people to go beyond minimum and strive to give our fish a nice large environment whatever the species. But as far as commercial breeding I think it is ok because like said the fish are not being used to show and are only being used for breeding purposes. I wouldn't compromise a large tank doing this though.

I do understand he's a commercial breeder in it as a bussiness as opposed to the average hobbiest. I'm sure not doing it to my fish but I'm not a commercial breeder, I might feel differently if this was how I paid my mortgage and feed my kids. A lot of people on MFK have his fish and I'm sure they don't like them any less knowing their fathers fins might have been clipped. I'm not crazy about doing it but I can understand the usefullness in this context. My two cents.

KIDS DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME!

Sounds fine to me.

Painlessly put some small holes in the males fin to decrease the probability of the female being killed painfully by a big male with big teeth.....Who can argue with that.

Sound absolutely fine in a breeding practice like Don's. Like others have said, I wouldn't do it at home, though. I would just use a divider.
