Punching Holes In Fins To Reduce Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think that it's a bit naive for anyone to think that a person who makes their living selling fish, wouldn't treat those fish as a commodity because for them that's exactly what they are. Those fish put food on their table, pay their bills, etc. For vendors that do this for a living, this is business pure & simple. Nothing shocking or morally wrong about that. Having said that, that doesn't mean that any vendor should promote their business, or this hobby, in an irresponsible manner.

For myself that's really all this comment/video is about.

Don clearly states in that video that he does not practice what he was preaching, due to his large units. He was simply passing along his little secret, for those that don't own an adequate sized tank to keep & breed dovii in what most of us here would consider a responsible manner.

who even thinks of this to start with? I mean were they losing a bunch of fish to aggression and someone said lets punch holes in the fins and that should slow down the male and how many other mutilating things did they try before they actually got something that worked? I think hes losing business over this thread strictly because hes giving people with little tanks a reason they think they can breed large predators in their tanks. just bad publicity for him imo. I wont be ordering from him anytime soon

Just FYI, Don doesn't even sell to the public directly. You have to go through one of his vendors. So if you're not going to order through him, I guess that leaves Rapps? Wish his shipping wasn't so expensive. Like I said, I'm placing my order with Gage as soon as I get back to OR and get my 225 running.

Anyone seriously bothered by this needs to put their money where their mouth is and learn about meat packing plants, slaughter houses, puppy farms etc as well as the BS fronts like PETA & the humane society and every other organization/company that deals with animals on a daily basis for the CONSUMER market and QUIT NOT spaying/neutering, QUIT eating meat, wearing leather & everything else made from animal by products, which is just about EVERYTHING you and I own.

You think he came up with this idea (if it was his) because he was just sitting around with nothing to do?

If you have or have had dovii or any other large growing CA/SA in the past 25 yrs, youre guilty of contributing to the demand for the fish so take pride in knowing you helped plant the seed of thought. Very few people on this forum are capable of housing a dovii or any other large growing CA/SA in what it needs so TONS of thought processes have been in the works to figure out how to do so with minimal casualties, and this seems to be just 1, along with water change routines, chemicals to remove chloramines, chlorine, feeding rituals & diet, lighting, filtration etc.

Maybe all the anger/animosity being put out there about a hypothetical situation would be better served toward education of the realization that youre driving these odd scenarios by promoting the housing of such large fish, if in fact you are doing so. If not, then dont worry about it. There are FAR more important things in the world than holes in a fishes fins so that it saves the lives of another, if thats in fact the concept. Big deal.

Then by your own logic we should all stop complaining and calling out anyone that keeps their fish in poor conditions, because that makes us all hypocrites. Every time you argue that a Red Devil shouldn't be housed in anything smaller than a 75 gal you are being a hypocrite, since you just ate a chicken breast that came from a poor mistreated soul. Why waste our time at all? There are far more important things than a random stunted fish, it's just a fish after all... big deal.

Or maybe when I get called out for being a horrible fish keeper I'll just call myself a breeder instead, that way I can still keep fish without having to deal with the moral issues. AND I get paid! holla

Yep, exactly. Well, minus the ability to apply Deductive Logic to my statement, you hit the nail on the head "as usual".
