puncture wound in G. Altifrons head?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats HITH. I've seen so many cichlids with that characteristic "shot to the forehead" hole.

Its HITH for sure. Yes, they can be very deep. Especially that one right in the center between the eyes.

Start treating for everything you can think of now before it erodes more. Those ones can grow significantly and end up showing skull.

My Oscar got the same one. I did everything i could think of. Even grounding my tank with a ground probe. It finally started healing, but it will never completely fill back in. :(

this was not gradual. it was not there yesterday morning and it was there last night.

and just for the record. my oscar's hole showed up (i swear) overnight.
Like the tissue underneath was already eroding and then it just all of a sudden sunk in.

well im gonna kick up the temp and treat the tank with jungle anti parasite and salt after i get the red ceibal fry out. If my fish start doing worse, then I am switching to CA with this hard water we have :(

nice geo jworth i hope it get better. GL

so how do you know your water quality is 'top notch' if you don't test....

he listed everything else, he only didnt have a test for the hardness which isnt something that many people test for, at least i know i dont (i would think as long as pH/hardness is stable then it shouldnt create any problems, iv never tested for hardness in my tanks and never had any issues with it)

I've never worried too much about my hardness or pH. I know the pH is about 7.6 or so. It never stopped discus and other SA cichlids from spawning like crazy, so I never worried much with it. I'm finding with notatus severums and Uaru that it's something to look into, though. I've seen them develop HITH while their tankmates are fine. This leads me to believe that it's strictly related to water parameters like pH and hardness... if it were stray current, hexamita, diet, or poor water quality (high nitrates + dissolved organics) then I should see it in my other severums, festivums, Geos, etc.

I need to pack up and move to GA where Peter's tap water is like fish heaven.
