Does it ever get vertical bars? The beginning of fenestratus means window in Latin due to the window bar pattern they have.

No it doesnt show vertical bars.

What about this fenestratus? Does it hide its bars?

On first glance I saw it as a bifas, but I can seen fene the more I look at it too. Great looking fish nonetheless!

This is a good example of how important it is to keep fish, the sources, and their collection areas straight......if it's important to you. Let that fish grow up a bit, and it'll be so gorgeous you won't care!

Having kept/bred both, Rio Dos Canos fenestratus; both Rio Grijalva & Rio Usamacinta bifasciatus, wilds one-and-all, currently spawning bifas in the thousands, your fish is clearly bifasciatus, quite possibly an F1 or FX Rio Grijalva, as they are becoming the more prevalent. Fenestratus is out of the question, which will indeed bar up, depending. The red spots on the Grijalva are larger and bluish/greenish hues typically more evident, making them far more attractive IMO. So as mentioned, consider it good fortune! OTOH, fenestratus is somewhat less common. I have always wavered which I would prefer. Both, naturally. If forced to decide, I'd keep fenes for show and breed bifas since the latter are easier and more prolific, spawning younger & smaller than synspilus for instance. Bifas (males) probably show better than fenes as individuals, in smaller tanks as well. Heck of a dilema LoL!
