Nobody knows for sure what species the original flowerhorns were derived from. Most speculate based on educated guesses from years of fish keeping experience that it is most likely some sort of South/Central American cichlid hybridization. It seems to be the consensus that the Trimaculatum is probably at least one of the most commonly used species to start with.

he's a real bully. put him in a 75 gal he's taking the whole tank (have 2 convicts with him). the convicts used to chase him when he was smaller :P anyways what do flowerhorns get their flowerline from? i know a trimac has 3 dots he has a long line looks like their seperating to 6 flowers and 2 growin on fins. his eye's have reddened since i put him in the bigger tank. no kok tho. will get pics soon

The flower line most likely comes from the Trimaculatum.

You think it's bad that yours owns a 75, mine dominates a 220g! I'm just glad he leaves my rays alone.

he's only 3 1/2 inches long though my red devils wern't even that agressive. he just cornered the female con and did a flopy tail thing to her is he trying to mate up with her? i'd think he's too young for that. got him a female GT ima try to get him to breed with her. she's in another tank for now im sure he'd kill her.
